The Need
We are a retired couple in our mid-70's. I travel around the world following my calling and invitations to address social justice issues. My spouse is a respected and talented local artist and philosopher.
After consulting with an architect about possible remodeling of our single-family home, we decided we could save money and lower on-going maintenance by downsize to a 1100 sq ft, two-bedroom, two-bath condo unit.
The architect agreed, and recommended we find a designer to create the space we wanted. We were referred to Sudha Marsh Designs, and the real fun began.

The Process & Results
Sudha began meeting with us, pursuing an unexpected line of discussion - not about furniture, color and tile choices, but rather she inquired about our interests, work, support community and friends. We talked about hobbies, social justice and other community issues of importance to us. Sudha also challenged us to consider how we intend to use our living space; how this space could compliment and enable our life passions.
My mind wandered to creating a bathing space that feels like an outdoor spa brought indoors. I stepped back to see what would happen. The bathroom was small and yet it surrendered to Sudha's creativity.
The design incorporated natural river rock, with redwood burl countertops on pre-manufactured drawers, a deep-tub for long delicious soaking baths, or a quick hair wash using the well-designed faucet system. All of this was accented with lighting and art. OMG!!
Being in our glorious mid-seventies, we anticipated the need for a handicap-accessible bathroom. With a concrete countertop, amazing use of black and clear-glass tiles she created a wheel-chair access to a fully-equipped shower stall. This bathroom had a door opening out into the master bedroom; and a bedroom door opening into the bedroom, blocking the bathroom door. I pointed out my concern and she showed us an old solution: use barn doors on the bathroom (not pocket doors which would have decreased closet space). We love it!
We quickly learned to express our ideas, and then - step back; get out of the way and be open to her design decisions.
